Protective Finish Coats
Now that the cabinets have been cleaned, the sealants removed and the surfaces stained, you can apply a protective finish coat over the top of the cabinets and doors. There are a wide variety of protective coatings that can be applied to the surface of your all wood cabinets. The following list has a few of the materials that can be used to protect and seal your cabinets from dirt, debris and greases that can stain bare wood permanently.
Polyurethane- This material is one of the most common ways to finish cabinets and other wood furniture. Itâs also one of the most durable finishes and works especially well on wood cabinets. Polyurethane has a wide variety of variations from modified oil based products to hand applied polyurethaneâeach providing a protective coat thatâs unique to the product.
Shellac- Some users prefer this product because of its great finish and solid shine. However, shellac isnât very durable and will have to be replaced every couple of years.
Lacquer- A lacquer based product has a very fast dry time. This prevents dust or debris from ruining a finish like a slower drying polyurethane product. Lacquers can also be colored to provide a unique variation to the wood finish.
Natural Oils- There are several natural oils that you can use to finish all wood cabinets. Tung oil is a great penetrating varnish that either polymerized or pure. Pure Tung oil leaves a more matte âlike finish while the polymerized version is a bit shinier. Linseed oil is another fantastic penetrating oil that leaves a great natural shine. All-natural penetrating oils need to be replaced often and require quite a bit of maintenance to keep them looking good.
